About Sonya Shields
Executive Leadership Consultant, Trainer, & Coach
Sonya Shields began her career in Washington, DC at Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), an environmental justice organization where she fell in love with the development field by raising millions of dollars writing direct mail and telemarketing scripts.
By 1997, Sonya was the Director of Development at the National LGBTQ Task Force, where she doubled the budget to over $5 million in three years. In 2000, she left Washington, DC, and accepted an Account Executive position with Prime Access and managed several Fortune 500 companies, including HBO and Time Magazine. But it was Sonya’s passion for social justice that pulled her back to the nonprofit sector. She worked in nonprofit executive positions for multiple organizations in the social justice and human rights space. Her deep experience in development, marketing, and communications helped to raise millions of dollars taking organizations to another level of visibility and funding. She served as the Director of Development for the Anti-Violence Project, Astraea Foundation, and Keep a Child Alive. In 2011, she accepted a contract position overseeing marketing for Brooklyn Community Services (BCS), and within five months, Sonya accepted a full-time position as the Chief Officer for External Relations and Advancement for the organization. This was a new position created after the merger of several departments, which included development, marketing, public affairs and volunteer services. During her seven year tenure at BCS, Sonya helped to put the organization on the map in the Tristate area. She led a team that diversified the funding by attracting a younger and more diverse generation of donors, new local business and corporations, celebrities, and influencers.
Sonya was able to spark ambassadorship amongst the leadership, and a stronger culture of fundraising across departments. It was Sonya’s strategic communication and thought leadership that played an instrumental role in the organization winning the Nonprofit Excellence Award in 2017.
Sonya left BCS in 2018, and launched her own consulting practice working with dozens of nonprofits including Rainbow Railroad, Children of Promise, NYC, Partners in Dignity and Human Rights, Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility, National Harm Reduction Coalition, and the Washington, DC Tennis and Education Foundation to name a few. It was during that time that she participated in Cause Effective’s survey that investigated the lived experiences of people of color in development. The results of the survey were shared in the Money, Power and Race Report and by 2019, Sonya was the lead facilitator in Cause Effective’s Preparing the Next Generation cohort program for BIPOC senior development professionals. For 3 ½ years, Sonya served as a Senior Associate and helped to build Cause Effective’s BIPOC cohort program, guided the organization in centering DEI in workshops, and provided consulting and coaching services to clients. During this time, Sonya also held positions as the Chief Operating Officer at Getting Out Staying Out and then Vice President of Strategic Growth at Children of Promise, NYC.
But it was Sonya’s vision, marketing, and thought leadership that elevated Cause Effective’s brand throughout the years and inspired her to join the team full-time. In 2023, she became the Senior Director of Strategic Growth and Innovation and helped to host a successful 40th anniversary event. It was at that special event, Sonya was announced as the new Executive Director and President and she served in the position for one year.
Sonya’s vision and impact as the Executive Director, and throughout her tenure has created a path for the organization to build into the future.
Through her platform as a thought leader and long-time nonprofit executive who has successfully raised millions of dollars and grown multiple organizations, Sonya has collaborated as a guest speaker with numerous national institutions like Columbia University Business School, Nonprofit Quarterly, Nonprofit Westchester, Staten Island Nonprofit, Better Business Bureau, Association of Black Foundation Executives, Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality, Junior League of New York, Women in Development, Fairfield County Community Foundation, Association of Fundraising Professionals of New York and many more.
